For those who spend a lot of time organizing files on Windows 11, a new update is bringing a welcome improvement. The latest build for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel introduces drag-and-drop functionality for the breadcrumbs in File Explorer.
But what exactly are breadcrumbs? These are the familiar navigation elements in the address bar that show your current location within File Explorer, like “This PC > Documents > Work.” Previously, you could click on these folders to navigate, but now you can simply drag and drop files directly onto them to move them to that specific location.
This seemingly minor change can be a big time-saver, especially for users who rely on subfolders for organization. Imagine having a document you’re working on in your Downloads folder, but it really belongs in a specific subfolder within your Documents. With the new drag-and-drop feature, you can just grab the file and drop it right onto the “Documents” breadcrumb, instantly moving it to the correct location.
It’s important to note that this feature is currently only available for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel, which is the most bleeding-edge testing group for Microsoft updates. This means it won’t be available to the general public for a while yet. However, it’s a promising sign of the improvements Microsoft is making to Windows 11’s file management system.
